Far from corresponding to an organised plan, the voyage that became renowned as the first circumnavigation of the globe was a sequence of projects, routes and episodes that were often dissonant and violent.  Keeping the geography of the voyage in mind, we will look at some of these encounters and disagreements between navigators and locals in Patagonia, the Marianas, the Philippines and the Moluccas and discuss the memorialisation of these contacts. We will focus on the memorialisation of Magellan, Humabon and Lapulapu in the Philippines, and subsequently on the memorialisation in Patagonia (Chile-Argentina) and the Moluccas (Indonesia).

This activity is organised as part of the exhibition “A Journey Through Human Genetic Diversity“, on display at the museum until September 8.
