Ancestry Traveller

About

We invite you to browse this website and travel through time and space. As an Ancestry Traveller, you’ll explore ideas, knowledge, and culture of yesteryear across the globe.

Inspired by Fernão Magalhães’s circumnavigation 500 years ago, the Ancestry Traveller website is an offshoot of a project on human diversity intertwining history, genetics, and culture. This first global voyage is the starting point for exploring Ancestry, an extremely complex, diverse, and often charged concept.

Ancestry stems from “antecedere”, Latin for, roughly, “what comes before”, thus alluding to our ancestors, roots, and origins, and encompasses such distinct disciplines as population genetics, anthropology, history, politics, sociology, and culture.

The travel we propose you embark on will make room for delving into these disciplines and engaging in a wider discussion of human ancestry and diversity. Much like the tides Magalhães and his crew had to ride and turn, this journey will be chock-full of surprises and challenges: reliable, scientific information, expert opinions and perspectives, and even suggestions for other expeditions on the subject.

Educational resources will also be available, and artistic exploration will be encouraged through public activities, which are sure to improve and enrich your experience.

Join us on this extraordinary journey.
